Solemnity was one of the dominant inputs into the decoration of the Dining Room, in contrast to the lightness of other rooms such as the Sitting Room or even the Music Rom. Suspended over the table was a cloth awning, in the manner of a religious pallium or an oriental tent, that would soften the echo of conversations and contribute towards a luxurious and ceremonial character, somewhat eccentric, established for mealtimes. The dishes were prepared in the kitchen and received on this floor via an internal serving life that still remains operational.
