The books that filled these shelves were lost in the wake of the abolition of Religious Orders in Portugal brought into effect in 1834 by the liberal monarchy that ruled after the civil war and according to which the assets of religious orders were to revert in favour of the state. The contents of the convent were disposed of by public auction and correspondingly dispersed; the reason that the contents of this library still today remain unknown.
