Concert cancelled (07/09/2023)

Due to the forecast of a high probability of precipitation on the 8th and 9th of September, the concerts scheduled for the first weekend of the Jazz at Monserrate Festival were cancelled as the necessary comfort and safety conditions are not met. Learn more about ticket refunds here.

Although the program of the Jazz at Monserrate’s first edition focused exclusively on the music, we quickly realised that it would be interesting for future editions to bring the dialogue between jazz and different artistic languages to the programme. Cinema ended up naturally emerging as one of the elements for this dialogue, and what better than inviting the pianist and director Filipe Melo to think up a film to be set to music and retold live?

The choice fell on “La Jetée”, by Chris Marker, which is more than just a film. It is a hugely creative revolutionary experience, itself a mixture of various arts, a perfect representation of the innovative spirit of the Nouvelle Vague, through the narrative resource of photomontage (about 200 photographs in 26 minutes).

In addition to Filipe Melo himself on the piano, and João Pereira on the drums, Jazz at Monserrate will feature the unique voice of Beatriz Batarda on stage in the narration.
