To kick off the second edition of Jazz at Monserrate, we organised a concert by Zé Eduardo, a band led by one of the most legendary Portuguese bass players. For this occasion, we can think of nothing better to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the edition of the album “A Jazzar no Cinema Português” (“Jazzing in Portuguese Cinema”) than this, which brings themes to the world of jazz that were part of the soundtracks of Portuguese films from different eras: “Se Eu Fosse Um Dia o Teu Olhar” (“If I Were to Meet Your Gaze One Day”), by Pedro Abrunhosa, “Os Índios da Meia-Praia” (“The Indians of Meia-Praia”), by José Afonso, “Balada de Rita” (“Rita's ballad”), by Sérgio Godinho, or “Cantiga da Rua” (“Song from the Street”).
Among older and more recent themes, covering music from the best known to the public to the perhaps most unknown, Zé Eduardo Unit revisits compositions in song format, opening them up to the field of improvisation, an indelible mark of jazz. Fulfilling one of our programming objectives, two artistic languages, music and cinema, on which the first weekend of the Festival is centred around, thus engage with one another, with a legendary Portuguese jazz artist, Zé Eduardo, on stage. What better way to open the Jazz at Monserrate 2023 Festival?
