27 Sept 2022
Tiqets has announced that the Moorish Castle has received the award for "Best Historical Landmark" in Portugal in its Remarkable Venue Awards 2022. The monument managed by Parques de Sintra, which was one of four nominees in this category along with the Palace of Monserrate, managed by the same entity, is one of the national winners of these tourism awards that recognise the best museums and attractions in nine countries, based on more than one million reviews made by customers of the Tiqets platform for attractions they have visited. This year, Portugal joins a group of countries where the awards have been given for the first time: France, Germany, Italy, Spain, The Netherlands, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom and USA.
Witness to the Islamic presence in the Sintra region, the Moorish Castle, whose function as a watchtower ensured the protection of Lisbon and its surroundings, is a military fortification built in the 10th century and expanded after the reconquest. Located in the heart of the Cultural Landscape of Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995, from the top of its walls it is possible to admire the town of Sintra in the foreground, the green-covered Sintra Mountains punctuated by beautiful estates, romantic chalets and interesting palaces, and the Atlantic coastline. According to the most recent statistics, this national monument received more than half a million visitors in 2019.
All the national winners of this year's Remarkable Venue Awards will now compete for the title of world winner in their respective categories. Until 19 October, visitors around the world are invited to vote for their favourite museums and attractions in the various categories via the link: https://www.tiqets.com/blog/best-museums-attractions-in-2022
Competing with the Moorish Castle for the world "Best Landmark" award are the Basilica Cathedral of Saint Denis (France); Neuschwanstein Castle (Germany); the Bourbon Tunnel (Italy); Keukenhof (Netherlands); the Castle of Almodóvar del Río (Spain); Qasr Al Watan Palace (United Arab Emirates); Stamford Bridge Stadium (UK); and SUMMIT One Vanderbilt (USA).
The global winners will be announced at the annual awards ceremony to be held at the Tourism Innovation Summit (TIS) in Seville on 2 November, which will be streamed free online for all those unable to attend the event in person.
