The National Palace of Pena reopens tomorrow, but other monuments in the Sintra Hills remain closed until the end of the week

24 Mar 2025

UPDATE: Although the reopening of the National Palace of Pena had been announced for 25/03/2025, Parques de Sintra was informed by Sintra Civil Protection late this morning that the Estrada da Pena has been closed for safety reasons. Further instructions from the authorities regarding the reopening of access to this monument are awaited.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This Tuesday, 25th March, the National Palace of Pena will reopen to the public. However, the Moorish Castle, the Convent of the Capuchos, the Park of Pena, the Chalet of the Countess of Edla, and the Park and Palace of Monserrate will remain closed until Friday, with their reopening expected on Saturday.

Visits to the National Palace of Pena will resume, but access to the palace will be restricted by barriers placed along the entire route leading to the monument.

Parques de Sintra has so far identified the fall of 350 trees. However, due to difficulties in movement and road obstructions, it has not yet been possible to assess the full extent of the damage in significant areas of the hunting grounds and forest perimeter of the Sintra Hills.

Despite the forecasted reopening of other monuments managed by Parques de Sintra in the Sintra Hills, assessments carried out over the past 24 hours regarding the instability of walls and slopes have prevented their reopening, as the necessary safety conditions have not yet been restored.

Movement within the forest perimeter also remains severely affected, and it is still not possible to ensure safe access to the monuments that remain closed.

The National Palace and Gardens of Queluz, the National Palace of Sintra, and the facilities of the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art in Belém remain open as usual.
