Restoration of the south-east and north-east façades of the Palace of Pena is underway

19 Dec 2024

Parques de Sintra has begun the conservation and maintenance project for the south-east and north-east façades of the entrance to the National Palace of Pena. The intervention aims to restore the mortar coatings and preserve the stone materials of the façades, namely the arches, columns and the limestone portal of the main entrance, which are profusely decorated.

The work focuses on the yellow body of the north side of the building and aims to restore the colour that characterises these façades. Using traditional techniques and materials similar to those used in the construction of the Palace, the mortar coatings will be stabilised and restored. Stone elements will be stabilised and conserved.

The intervention underway is part of the Management and Safeguarding Plan for the National Palace of Pena, whose primary objective is to ensure the conservation and authenticity of this building complex, while at the same time helping to improve visitor experience. These works involve an investment of 150,000 euros and will last until June 2025.
